Rape Case Study In the case of a crime assault and suspicion of rape of a 14 year-old girl; Jones, Walsh and Bert were arrested. During the investigation, the police obtain statement from a man name Bland providing additional information that suspect Jones was involved in three separate assaults and rapes of juveniles over three days. The prosecution filed charges against Jones, Walsh and Bert for their involvement in the crime. The suspect, Bert then hired an attorney to defend him and explains to his lawyer that he did not participate in any acts of raping these girls and that he was only present one time with Jones and all he did was hit one of the girls. Bert also goes on to say that he can prove this because at the times the other rapes are alleged to have occurred, he was with Mook, who is currently out of the country on a mountain climbing trip and will not return for 2 months. Bland also contacts the prosecutor’s office and provides a written statement to the prosecuto r that Walsh was not present during any of the rapes. (Case Study, n.d.) In the story many things are used as symbols such as the actual cask of amontillado, the trowel, the jester costume and the setting in which there is two in the story. Another literary technique used significantly in the story is irony. Irony is the expression of ones meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite. In the short story â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado,† Montresor a very troubled man who plans to seek revenge on another man named Fortunato for humiliating him. He presents us with a brief understanding of his motive on why he must kill Fortunato. It is carnival and Montresor spots Fortunato and approaches him to discuss about amontillado. While discussing about the amontillado, Montresor has convinced Fortunato to go with him to his vaults located in the catacombs where he claims to have the amontillado. As they make their way towards the catacombs, Montresor made sure that his servants would not be present at the time. Entering the catacombs Montresor notices the coughing of Fotunato because of the dampness and nitre. Halfway through the catacombs Montresor gives Fortunato some wine called Medoc to help with his cough and get him intoxicated. Being an underage cabdriver it gave him enough money to survive but not enough to live a lavish lifestyle that every teenager wants to live. Eventually he would notice this and Kennedy would lingered in a life without purpose. One day in his ordinary life Ed Kennedy decides to go to the bank without knowing that this event would change his life. Kennedy would be in a bank robbery, not as robbing the bank but as an innocent person, and would be held at gunpoint many times for not keeping his mouth shut. Later assignments would come and Kennedy as a character would evolve from an isolationist into a hero that would help others. Kennedy would charm the people in his assignments to change and would gain a purpose in life that both the assignments and him always wanted. The theme of this novel is to find a purpose in your life and to never stop striving to find it no matter what the circumstances are. In the novel I am the Messenger Ed Kennedy is living a life without purpose and just surviving. But by doing each assignment with much charisma Kennedy inspires many to strive to become better; therefore, making the society around him a better place to live in. When Kennedy finally found his purpose he learned that some assignments would be simple while others would be painful to go through, which he had never experienced because he lived a life of isolation. Ultimately this novel, I am the Messenger, can relate to many people, which can motivate people to find a purpose in life. Although the assignments were vividly harsh it depicts a point that everyone can learn from. Living in isolation does not harm anyone except for yourself but once you live a life full of charity and purpose one can experience life in a positive way. By living a life with these attributes Ed Kennedy evolved into a character that charms his assignments into doing what is right. The theme of the novel teaches to find a purpose in our lives so that we can live a life full of happiness even in the times of darkness.
